Finding a competent, helpful and approachable solicitor in London can be a daunting task. There are many different firms and a plethora of companies advertising on line or on TV telling you they are “no win no fee” and you get “100% compensation”. That’s all very well but who do you speak to? Are they middle men selling on your case to personal injury lawyers or are they an established firm with a proven record?
When you have suffered an accident at work or an injury at work and you want to make an injury claim then it is important that you know that the firm dealing with your case is a professional one with a proven track record.
A personal injury covers a variety of injuries such as whiplash from a car accident, a slip causing a broken limb or medic al negligence leading to permanent injury. When looking for a lawyer to represent you in your claim ensure you speak to more than one firm.
It is important that you feel confident with both the company and person you are engaging to act on your behalf. It is important to feel you are being looked after and that your best interests are top priority, you may like to ask yourself some questions.
Who am I speaking to? – A call centre assistant or a qualified solicitor
Can I visit the solicitor in person? – An initial consultation is usually free
Are they an experienced personal injury lawyer? – Ask how many cases they have personally dealt with (not the firm) which are similar to yours and the outcome?
What action you need to take in the event of an accident/incident
1. Make sure the accident is recorded – if in a public building or shop make sure the accident is recorded in their accident book.
2. Ensure you have names, email and addresses of potential witnesses
3. Make a note of the time and date of the incident/accident ,and write down you version of the event
4. Make sure you note down the name of the person who has looked after you
5. Make sure you have a copy of the accident forms and do not sign anything that may indicate you take responsibility for the accident
6. Take photographs of the scene –camera phones are widely available now. If you do not have a cameraphone request that one of your witnesses take photos for you.
7. Make sure the photos include images of the injury, surroundings and any other images you think pertinent.
8. In the event of a physical injury make an appointment with your doctor and explain the incident and the injuries resulting from it.
9. Keep records and receipts of any expenses incurred due to the injury. I.e. taxi fares as you may not have been able to drive
10. If you are unable to work due to the injury keep records of the doctors’ notes stating how long you were off work.
